“Keeping Short Accounts with God”
In Psalm 32, David starts out showing how exuberant our hearts are when our sins have been forgiven. What a wonderful thing to have our sin covered, our transgression forgiven, and to enjoy the peace of God again. Living the right kind of life, a righteous life, brings about happiness and blessing from God.
David also shares how barren our life is when we hold on to our sin. When we have unconfessed sin, it affects us in a horrible way. David shows his choice about not coming to the Father and confessing his sins. He said, "When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long”. God's hand was heavy upon him, and David had to admit that he was weary from the inward battle he was raging. His strength was dried up within him like the dehydration of the body in the drought with the sun parching everything around.
I am so glad that we do not have to stay that way. We can have boldness and come back to the Father for forgiveness. It is a choice. In verse 5, we see David confessing his sins to God. David started giving in, or yielding to God's invitation to come back to Him.
We need to remember this. God already knows about our sin, so we need to quit trying to hide it from God. We need to go ahead and acknowledge it to Him! I love 1st John 1:9; it says: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. When we confess our sins, we agree with God that it is sin. Confession happens when we quit trying to justify what we have done and we agree with God that it is sin, then we repent of that sin.
What a wonderful thing it is when we have forgiveness from God. When God forgives us of our sins, the account is cleared out. It is so important that when we sin we don't run away from God, but we run to God. We must not let our account with God stretch out and keep getting larger. We must not stay away from God. We need to keep short accounts with Him.
What a blessing it is to have our sins forgiven and our fellowship restored. When God forgives us of our sins, the account is cleared out. There is beauty in confessing our sins and knowing His forgiveness of our sins. We are reminded in this Psalm that keeping short accounts with God just makes good sense.
When God makes your heart upright, in other words when God clears your account, it will cause you to have joy. It will cause you to be glad because your account is settled with Him. What a wonderful peace that is.
I want to encourage you to "Keep short accounts with God”. Don't let your sins keep you from God. Instead of running away from God when you sin, run to God and confess it. Let Him restore His wonderful peace in your soul. Keep short accounts with God, and you will find that it is the best way to live and enjoy the favor of the Lord.
